5 Tips To Make Moving Day Less Stressful!
Moving can be a stressful experience. Ensuring these 5 items are completed prior to moving day will make you feel so much more at ease when the day arrives. Before we get into it, the one over-arching tip I have for you is, DO NOT PROCRASTINATE! Packing up and figuring out what should be donated, sold, or trashed takes time. So give yourself the time and space to do just that. Your brain will thank you, trust me!
Without further ado, here are 5 tips to prep for moving day!
Book ThE Elevator: Elevators can book up quickly, especially if you’re moving on the first of the month or middle of the month. Sometimes buildings have no move-in/outs on certain days of the week so be sure to inquire about that, as well as any deposit or booking fees that they may have.
HIRE A MOVER (and a few friends hehe): Be sure to call multiple movers and understand what’s covered in their pricing. Typically, movers price by how many bedrooms and bathrooms you have as well as square footage. Another item to note is if your building has easy access to the loading dock. Movers can charge more if there are stairs, or if it’s complicated to get to. If you have nice friends, consider asking them as well! Just be aware that moving is very physical!
PACK YOUR STUFF: Don’t procrastinate on this one! Packing is not “one box fits all”. You’ll likely need a variety of boxes in different sizes and sturdiness to ensure your belongings arrive in one piece. Bubble wrap and towels were our best friend for fragile items. Consider using sustainable companies like Frog Box. This company will deliver the boxes straight to your door and also pick them up once you’re done with them. What a great idea! Otherwise, head to your local hardware store to pick up cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape, and a permanent marker.

KNOW THE COSTS: It’s always a good idea to be on top of your finances. Creating a budget for your move is important and can include items like the mover’s fee, elevator deposit (which isn’t always refundable), moving supplies, a cleaner & hard-earned beer and pizza for your family and friends who helped.
utilities and IMPORTANT docs: Don’t leave this ‘til the last minute. Ensure important documents like your driver’s license, health card, credit cards, etc. are changed to reflect your new address. Transfer your internet, phone, hydro, water, and gas before your move-in date. Not having Netflix after a long day of moving would be earth-shattering. Pro tip - Set up mail forwarding through Canada Post to ensure no important mail is missed.
It’s definitely better to be overprepared vs. underprepared for your move. Completing these steps well in advance of your move will ensure your move is far less stressful than it has to be!
