Neighbourhood Highlight: Little Portugal

Geographic Boundaries:

Dovercourt | Queen | Train Tracks | College

Nestled between Trinity Bellwoods and Roncy is sweet, sweet Little Portugal. This neighbourhood is mainly residential, with beautiful Victorian-style homes on tree-lined streets. You’ll also find condo developments popping up on the main roads, mostly along Queen Street.

The main roads like Dundas and College are dotted with an eclectic mix of storefronts where you’ll find restaurants, Portuguese and Brazilian bakeries and vintage and independent shops.

Portugal is known for a delicious pastry called pastel de nata. These sweet, custardy tarts can be found all over Portugal and can also be found at bakeries in this Toronto neighbourhood. They’re technically challenging to make (as showcased in the most recent season of The Great Canadian Bake Off) and absolutely delicious when made correctly.

The traditional way is to serve it warm with a dash of cinnamon on top. It’s also great with a cup of coffee. If you find yourself at a Portuguese bakery be sure to pick one up. Better yet, if you’re in Portugal, try one. You won’t be disappointed.
